Autism Ontario is happy to announce that the 2017 One to One Summer Support Worker Reimbursement Fund is now open for application.

We will accept all applications received between May 1, and June 2, 2017 and have a random draw to determine eligibility.

 Autism Ontario - Chatham-Kent

  • Formed late in 1991
  • Provides information and support to parents
  • Family Focused Funding programs
  • Provides professionals with information about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs)
  • Advocates for individuals with an ASD and their families
  • Representatives on the Special Education Advisory Committees (SEAC) of local school boards
  • Meetings of the Chapter take place from September to June
  • Dontaed books on ASD to local library, college, and school boards
  • Raises awareness in our communities on ASDs
  • Supports local community summer autism camp

What are Autism Spectrum Disorders?

  • Name given to a group of developmental disorders that are related to Autism
  • Current prevalence rate is 1 in 150
  • Estimated that 80,000 Ontarians are affected by ASD
  • Typically appears in first three years of life
  • Affects the typical development of the brain in areas of social interaction and communication skills
  • Affects boys four times as often as girls
  • Currently no known cause.  Studies are being conducted on genetic and environmental factors
  • One of the most common developmental disabilities
  • There are many therapies that have proven effective in unlocking the potential of the individual
  • Currently no known cure
  • Early diagnosis is important

Types of Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autistic Disorder - impairments in social interaction, communication, and imaginative play prior to age 3.  Stereotyped behaviours, interests and activities.

Asperger's Syndrome - impairments in social interaction and the presence of restricted interests and activities, with no clinically significant general delay in language, and testing in the range of average to above average intelligence

Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified - (commonly referred to as atypical autism) a diagnosis of PDD-NOS may be made when a child does not meet the criteria for Autism or Asperger's, but there is a severe impairment in specified behaviours

Full memberships in Autism Ontario start at $50 a year.  Support options start at $10 per year.  Subscription to Autism Matters is $25 per year without membership.
