Mission
“respiteservices.com working together to facilitate respite options that empower individuals with differing abilities and their families to lead active and rewarding lives.”

Vision
“Creating Community Connections”
The guiding principles of respiteservices.com are:
1. To develop a comprehensive respite system in the Waterloo District.
2. To develop and maintain a coherent access process for families of children and adults requiring respite options.
3. To facilitate respite options for individuals that match their identified needs.
4. To work closely with service providers to advocate for appropriate service options to meet the needs identified.
Respite care is a family support service that provides temporary relief from the physical and emotional demands involved in caring for a family member who has a disability. Respite creates greater opportunities for all family members to live actively and participate in community activities and allows parents/guardians time for themselves.

What is respite?
Respite, by definition, means an interval of rest or relief. Respite services give primary caregivers a temporary break from the routine of providing care to a person with a developmental disability. Respite care offers people who receive support further options for individualized, positive, enriched, and supported environments. This allows all people greater opportunity to live actively, expanding personal networks and community.

Respite services are one of the most heavily requested developmental services in Waterloo Region. This site is intended to provide information on each of those agencies and the different respite options they offer.

Partner agencies also offer a variety of other services and supports for individuals with a developmental disability and their families. These supports include:
  • Information, intake, and referral
  • Service coordination
  • Residential programs
  • Community Participation Support and Passport programs
  • Respite services
  • Clinical services and programs
  • CHAP Worker Bank
Further information about these programs is available in this website.
