People have individualized funding from many different sources that they use to create a plan for a good life. This includes in home support and participation which leads to connections to friendships and valued roles in our communities. To make this happen, people use their funding to engage someone who will provide direct support. Depending on your community or situation, this person might be referred to as a Direct Support Provider, a “CHAP” (Community Helper for Active Participation), a personal assistant or a respite provider. Whatever term you use, they provide valuable support for people.
Recruiting someone to do this important work is not always easy. You want the right person at the right time. Supportyourway.ca/respiteservices.com was created as a tool to help with this task. It’s a place where someone who wants to provide this service can register so that they can get connected with someone who needs them. Agencies who host this tool agree to help with the screening so that when a family connects they know that the person has provided a current vulnerable person’s police clearance, references and has given information about their work experience, skills and availability. The tool allows both families and the direct support provider/respite provider to post classified ads and create profiles. The classified ads don’t give out identifying information until you are ready. Registered families have access to see profiles that outline the skills of the people who are offering their services.
We know that even with this tool recruitment is challenging. Sometimes it takes a long time to get the right person. Supportyourway.ca/respiteservices.com is a good recruitment resource available at no charge. We encourage people who are interested in getting connected to families and people who need this support to register and get more information about the process.
