What is an Independent Respite Provider?

   An Independent Respite Provider offers relief to parents who have a child with one or more various disabilities. The respite may be provided in the home of the child or in the community. Independent Respite Providers who complete the screening process and are registered with respiteservices.com may advertise their availability and connect with families looking for respite in St. Thomas and across Elgin County.  Hours of work are variable depending on the needs of the family requiring respite and may include days, evenings, weekends, holidays, summer. The registry enables Independent Respite Providers to indicate their availability.  Those on the Independent Respite Provider registry are not employees of respiteservices.com nor Community Living Elgin and are considered self-employed when providing respite to a family.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide respite services as outlined by the family
  • Provide care and supervision according to the individuals needs as outlined by the family.
  • Provide safe and appropriate social and recreational support both in the home and in the community as outlined by the family.
  • Act as a positive role model.
  • Ability and willingness to work with persons with disabilities
  • Effective communication skills with both verbal and non-verbal populations
  • Commitment to providing quality life experiences in home and in the community
  • Experience providing care and support to persons with disabilities is an asset
  • Education and training in supporting persons with disabilities is an asset
  • First Aid and CPR training is an asset


To register as an Independent Respite Provider:

  • Complete the online application form and upload your resume.
  • Have three separate references complete the Independent Respite Provider Reference form.
  • Submit a current Police Reference Check including the Vulnerable Persons Screening that is current within six months
  • Attend an Activation Meeting once the above registration steps are complete. Applicants must attend an Activation Meeting before their status as an Independent Respite Provider will be available online for families to use in their search for a respite provider
