Respite Options in Waterloo Region

In Waterloo Region, nine developmental service agencies offer a variety of respite programs, both in-home and out-of-home. These programs serve people of varying ages with a variety of different needs and interests. Admission Criteria : Individuals who meet criteria for developmental services who do not:
-require acute medical treatment; or,

Comments : Six group homes in the Kitchener-Waterloo area offer out-of-home, overnight respite supports. Teams of fully trained and experienced staff provide high quality care twenty-four hours per day. Each home offers a relaxed atmosphere with opportunities to enjoy varied social, leisure, and recreational programs and community outings.

Two of these homes have 24/7 nursing staff. Weekends are the most frequently used time frames, but the service is available seven days per week.

Respite clients live and participate alongside full-time residents in each home. Compatibility as well as individual need is considered in selecting the most appropriate respite site.

We have many families who use group home and apartment respite on a regular basis, and we "schedule" respite stays at the beginning of each calendar year. Additional respite can be offered, if space permits, for seasonal or special occasions or in emergency situations.
