Respite Options in Waterloo Region

In Waterloo Region, nine developmental service agencies offer a variety of respite programs, both in-home and out-of-home. These programs serve people of varying ages with a variety of different needs and interests. General Information : Our respite support is a home away from home. It is an opportunity for people to have a change of pace, get together with friends and learn from new experiences in a familiar and reassuring place.

What are Respite Services?
We provide residential accommodation in a home-like setting on weekends and 24/7 during the summer months of July and August. Both services offer an opportunity to have your stay supported by qualified and trained staff dedicated to the respite service.

Who are they for?
Weekend Relief provides residential support in a home-like setting for adults 18 years of age or older who live with a caregiver outside of the Elmira District Community Living’s residential services. This service is available to residents in Waterloo Region who have been referred by Developmental Services Ontario. (DSO)
Summer Respite is available to persons who typically use Respite throughout the year and is available for a week in the summer period of July or August.

Where are Respite Homes Located?
At two homes in Elmira.

What are the benefits of Respite Support?
Respite is an opportunity for people to have a break, broaden their social circle, work on independent living skills, experience life away from home and experience community activities. Parents and caregivers benefit by taking time for themselves or spending time with other family members. Respite can provide the break that you need to take a vacation or to cover for times of emergency or crisis.
EDCL also offers a fee for service respite during the week and/or weekends at either location.

Eligibility : Individuals must be 18 years of age and have a developmental disability as confirmed through the DSO.
