Creating Community Connections

respiteservices.com helps to facilitate respite options that empower individuals with differing abilities and their families to lead active and rewarding lives.

respiteservices.com consists of agencies funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. We are collaborating to develop a more dynamic respite network for both children and adults in Haliburton, Kawartha, Peterborough and Northumberland. The Respite Advisory Team was developed in 1999 to recognize and respond to the respite needs within the four counties area. The team consists of 6 to 8 agency members who provide ongoing respite support within the counties. This group acts in an advisory capacity to respiteservices.com. Other organizations providing respite services for families are invited to join.

The guiding principles of respiteservices.com
  1. To develop a comprehensive respite system.
  2. To develop and maintain a coherent access process for families of children and adults requiring respite options.
  3. To facilitate respite options for individuals that matches their identified needs.
  4. To work closely to advocate for appropriate service options to meet the needs identified.
Respite care is a family support service that provides temporary relief from the physical and emotional demands involved in caring for a family member who has a disability. Respite creates greater opportunities for all family members to live actively and participate in community activities and allows parents/guardians time for themselves.

The CHAP Program

The CHAP (Community Helpers for Active Participation) Program is an integral part of respiteservices.com. The program maintains a database of independent respite providers (Worker Registry). Families who want to hire respite workers join the Family Registry. A CHAP Coordinator provides families with profiles of indepedent providers via a matching system.
Eligibility: Caregivers and agency representatives of children with a developmental or physical disability, and adults with a developmental disability are eligible to use the service.
